EDP vs EDT vs Perfume Oil: Fragrance Concentrations and Longevity Explained
Share
Shopping for fragrance, you will constantly see initials like EDP and EDT, and increasingly, perfume oils. These terms describe a fragrance's concentration, and understanding them is the key to choosing scents that last as long as you want them to. Here is a simple, no-jargon guide.
What does fragrance concentration mean?
Every fragrance is a mix of aromatic oils dissolved in alcohol (and sometimes water). The concentration is simply the percentage of those aromatic oils in the bottle. The higher the concentration, the richer and longer-lasting the scent tends to be. That single factor explains most of the difference between the labels you see on the shelf.
The main fragrance concentrations
Parfum (Extrait de Parfum)
The most concentrated form, usually around 20 to 30% aromatic oils. Parfum is rich, long-lasting and projects close to the skin in an intimate way. Expect the longest wear of any concentration.
Eau de Parfum (EDP)
Typically 15 to 20% oils, EDP is the most popular concentration today. It offers an excellent balance of strength, longevity and value, usually lasting most of the day. If you want one all-rounder, EDP is usually the safe choice.
Eau de Toilette (EDT)
Around 5 to 15% oils, EDT is lighter and fresher, making it ideal for hot weather, daytime and the office. It generally does not last as long as EDP, but its softer projection can be exactly what you want in warm conditions.
Eau de Cologne (EDC)
The lightest traditional concentration, around 2 to 5% oils. Crisp and refreshing, but short-lived, best for a quick splash.
What about perfume oils?
Perfume oils (also called attars or concentrated oils) skip the alcohol almost entirely, delivering fragrance in an oil base. This makes them extremely long-lasting. They sit on the skin and release slowly over many hours. They project more softly and intimately than an alcohol spray, which many people love for close-up, all-day wear. Oils are also a cornerstone of traditional Arabian perfumery. You can explore them in our perfume oils collection.
Which concentration should you choose?
- Want all-day power? Choose Parfum or EDP.
- Hot weather or office wear? An EDT is fresher and easier to wear.
- Maximum longevity, soft and skin-close? Try a perfume oil.
Remember that concentration is not the only factor. The specific ingredients and how your skin reacts also matter. Two EDPs can perform very differently.
Tips to make any fragrance last longer
- Apply to moisturised skin. Fragrance clings better to hydrated skin.
- Spray on pulse points: neck, wrists and inner elbows.
- Do not rub your wrists together; it can break down the top notes.
- Spritz onto clothing and hair (where suitable) for longer-lasting projection.
