The original 2012 Café Rose is a rich, opulent Private Blend that layers a jammy triple-rose heart over a bitter espresso, incense and patchouli base, with saffron and black pepper adding a spiced edge. It smells gourmand and boozy-dark rather than fresh, and the coffee note is what makes it memorable and slightly divisive. Some love the rose-and-coffee pairing while others find it heavy and old-school. The original projects strongly and lasts most of a day. Note that Tom Ford's later reformulation (a separate listing) is markedly lighter, airier and weaker in performance, a common complaint from fans of the original.
